In 1862 Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, a shy Oxford mathematician with a stammer, created a story about a little girl tumbling down a rabbit hole. Thus began the immortal adventures of Alice, perhaps the most popular heroine in English literature. Countless scholars have tried to define the charm of the Alice books–with those wonderfully eccentric characters the Queen of Hearts, Tweedledum, and Tweedledee, the Cheshire Cat, Mock Turtle, the Mad Hatter et al.–by proclaiming that they really comprise a satire on language, a political allegory, a parody of Victorian children’s literature, even a reflection of contemporary ecclesiastical history. Perhaps, as Dodgson might have said, Alice is no more than a dream, a fairy tale about the trials and tribulations of growing up–or down, or all turned round–as seen through the expert eyes of a child.

Distant lands, the beautiful gardens of splendid palaces, the sea, the jungle and its beasts, even the desert, are the wonderfully exotic settings for the Just So Stories. Inspired by Kipling's natural empathy with the animal world and by his delight in the foibles and the weaknesses of human nature, they are breathtakingly imaginative fables whose subjects range from the animals themselves to the origins of things. The stories are linked by poems and scattered with the author's own illustrations, which, with their hidden jokes and puzzles, add an intriguing dimension to the volume. Though written for children, the Just So Stories are so strikingly apt and the style so idiosyncratically rich that the book has become a classic transcending the boundaries of age. Here is one of the most beloved poems of childhood-Robert Browning's "The Pied Piper of Hamelin"-illustrated by Kate Greenaway, perhaps 19th-century England's most popular illustrator of children's books. The poem, of course, tells the story of a strange piper who promises to rid the town of Hamelin of its hordes of rats. In return, the Mayor and the Council promise him a fee of 1,000 guilders. The piper carries out his part of the bargain, but when the town tries to cheat him out of his fee, the piper exacts a terrible revenge. Now children and readers of all ages can enjoy this bittersweet tale in this inexpensive edition featuring the complete poem and 36 full-color plates. Miss Greenaway's delicate, ethereal watercolors bring the story to life, effectively lightening the somewhat grim events that are the subject of the poem.

Price: $16.95
Water Babies by Charles Kingsley -- Tom, an ill-treated boy, jumps into a cool stream to clean the soot off himself -- and becomes a water baby, cleaner and happier than he has ever been, in a fairy world under the sea. Meeting beautiful and frightening creatures, Tom travels to the Other-end-of-Nowhere on an unforgettable voyage of discovery. Adored by readers of all ages, these classic stories in two volumes spin the unforgettable story of Mowgli—a boy raised by a pack of wolves—as he learns indelible lessons about the laws of the jungle as well as the needs of the heart. Through Mowgli’s journey, readers also meet the tiger Shere Khan, who stalks man and beast alike, the rock python Kaa, who dispenses wisdom, and the aging wolf Akela, who struggles as his leadership of the pack is challenged. Set in India, Kipling’s great masterpiece is an allegory for Britain’s imperialism, filled with high adventure and extraordinary characters. The mythic tale of a boy looking for where he truly belongs—either with the man-pack of the village or the wolf-pack of the wild—The Jungle Books touch both our intellect and our emotions, while Kipling’s dazzling storytelling makes them the timeless archetype for popular tales to come.
FIRST GRADE: Aesop - the Entire Collection of 358 Fables FIRST GRADE: The Crimson Fairy Book by Andrew Lang
Price: $18.95
Price: $18.95
'Many people are not in the least disturbed at the harm that befalls them, provided they can see their enemies’ downfall first’. In a series of pithy, amusing vignettes, Aesop created a vivid cast of characters to demonstrate different aspects of human nature. Here we see a wily fox outwitted by a quick-thinking cicada, a tortoise triumphing over a self-confident hare and a fable-teller named Aesop silencing those who mock him. Each jewel-like fable provides a warning about the consequences of wrong-doing, as well as offering a glimpse into the everyday lives of Ancient Greeks. This definitive edition is the first translation into English of the entire corpus of 358 unbowdlerized fables. It is fully annotated, with an introduction that rescues the fables from a tradition of moralistic interpretation. The Crimson Fairy book contains a fascinating collection of tales from many countries: Hungary, Russia, Rumania, Finland, Iceland, Japan, and Sicily are only some of them. Filled with imagination, excitement, and adventure, these tales will delight children with their illogical yet strangely reasonable events, and will offer parents a pleasant change from the well-worn favorites. One story (The Cottager and His Cat) tells how cats were introduced to Iceland; another Japanese tale (The Crab and the Monkey) tells how a crab gets the best of a roguish monkey; and a remarkable tale (Little Wildrose) form Rumania tells how a beautiful child was reared in an eagle's nest.
